CSU GE 2022-2023
California State University General Education Breadth Requirements
General Education (GE) consists of courses selected from a variety of disciplines, intended to provide a well-rounded education. Completing a GE pattern is one of the recommended components for transfer to any CSU. Please meet with a counselor and visit https://www.assist.org/ for the required major preparation coursework and grade point average. Students may be eligible for transfer to California State Universities, with junior standing, upon completion of 60 transferable semester units with a grade point average of 2.0 (“C”) or better. This information is based on the 21-22 Mesa, City and Miramar Catalogs. Be advised some information can change with catalog updates throughout the year. Consult the SDCCD district website for current catalogs and updates (including addenda and errata).
Please read the following important information:
- *Course is listed in more than one area; but cannot be certified in multiple areas.
- Golden Four Course Areas – A1, A2, A3 and B4 are required for admission into any California State University. Pass/No Pass(P/NP) grades are NOT recommended in these Areas. All CSU campuses require letter grades of “C-” or better for graduation.
- A General Education (GE) Certification is an official document from the San Diego Community College District which certifies a student.
- Certification is not automatic - students must request certification. Students may request certification after acceptance to a CSU/UC.
- Official transcripts from all other accredited institutions attended must be on file and will be reviewed for inclusion in the certification process.
- A minimum of 39 semester units is required for a complete certification.
- All official transcripts including college, high school, AP, and IB test scores are required.
- Acceptable scores on the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams and the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) may count towards satisfying CSU-GE subject areas. Consult the college catalog and a counselor for details.
- Advanced Placement (AP) scores of 3, 4, or 5 can be used to satisfy most of the courses in CSU subject areas. Consult the college catalog and a counselor for details.
- Please see the college catalog and meet with a counselor for details. Please note, AP applicability listed on this sheet is for exams taken 2009 or later, consult the catalog for details on exams taken.
- Prior to CSUGE-Breadth pattern certification, students must complete a minimum of 3 units of general education within the CSUGEBreadth pattern or 12 units in residence at the San Diego Community College.

AREA A – ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION AND CRITICAL THINKING: Minimum 9 semester units(12-15 quarter units). Select one course from each group.

AREA B – SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY AND QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Minimum 9 semester units(12-15 quarter units). Select one course from each group - at least one course from Physical Science (B1), Life Science (B2), (B3) and one lab (if a course in B1 or B2 does not include a lab, then 1 lab Course from area B3 must be completed; lab course must match one of the two lecture courses taken from B1 or B2) and Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning (B4).

AREA C – ARTS AND HUMANITIES: Minimum 9 semester units (12-15 quarter units). Three courses with at least one from the Arts and one from the Humanities.

AREA D – SOCIAL SCIENCES: : Minimum 6 semester units (8 quarter units). Select two courses.
AREA E – LIFELONG LEARNING AND SELF-DEVELOPMENT: (Minimum 3 units (4-5
quarter units).
Students may not complete Area E using only physical
activity
courses(EXSC).
Participating institutions are asked to limit the number
of physical-activity unitsthey count when certifying a student for Area
E. VETERANS:
Students who have completed at least 6
months of continuous active US military service have satisfied Area E. DD214
or
military transcript must be on file.
AREA F – – ETHNIC STUDIES:Minimum 3 units (4 quarter units).

CSU GRADUATION REQUIREMENT in U.S. History and American Institutions (Not part of CSUGE or required for admission; but may be completed prior to transfer). NOTE: Courses used to meet this requirement may also be used in Area D of this document with the approval of the CSU campus where a student is accepted.
