Before You can Graduate

Are You Ready to graduate?

Below are the steps you need to take to ensure you graduate and can participate in the May Commencement Ceremony.


Step 1: See a counselor - Create an Education plan

You will need to schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor to develop your educational plan for the specific degree or certificate you are pursuing. Students can meet with their counselor in EOPS, DSPS, STAR/TRIO, or General Counseling Office

Check with  EOPS, DSPS, STAR/TRIO, or General Counseling Office for their  to see if there is additional criteria that must be met.


Step 2: apply to Graduate

Once you have an educational plan for the degree or certificate you wish to receive, you need to submit Apply for Graduation though your student portal at https://myportal.sdccd.edu. Under My Academics on the left-hand side of your student portal, click Apply for Graduation. Be sure to click submit at the end!

  • You can apply up to two (2) semesters before you plan to finish your classes/graduate. However, it is recommend to submit your petition the semester before you graduate.

NOTE: Deadlines are final. If you are earning a Degree and/or Certificate, you are required to apply for graduation.

October 1, 2019 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation ONLY for students transferring to a CSU in Spring 2020 who are completing an Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or an Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T). Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT).
 

November 15, 2019 -Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation and be a Fall 2019 graduate. Students filing after this date will be a Spring 2020 graduate.

Tentative: February 13, 2020 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation for students transferring to a CSU in Fall 2020 who are completing an Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or an Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T). Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT).

Tentative: March 22, 2020 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation and ensure their name will be included in the commencement program. 
**Students filing after this date, but before April 30, 2020 will still be Spring 2020 graduates, but their name may not be in the Commencement Program.**

April 30, 2020 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation and be a Spring 2020 graduate. Students filing after this date will be a Summer 2020 graduate.

July 31, 2020 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation and be a Summer 2020 graduate.  Students filing after this date will be Fall 2020 graduates.

Step 3: Wait for your degree evaluation on your mysdccd portal

Once you submit your Application for Graduation, you may view your graduation status in the My Academics section, located on the left-hand side of your student portal.

  • Make sure your email address is up to date, in case your evaluator needs to contact you for any reason. You can update your email address through your student portal.
  • It may take up to 3-4 months to receive your graduation status online.
  • If you have trouble understanding your graduation status, please contact your counselor.

Step 4: Receive an invitation for the Commencement ceremony

The Commencement Ceremony is held once a year in May. Your invitation to participate in the Commencement Ceremony will be  mailed to you beginning late March (for Summer 2019 and Fall 2019 graduates) through mid-April (for Spring 2020 graduates). We will also send invitations by email.

  • Your invitation will include required registration information to participate in the Commencement Ceremony.
  • Make sure your mailing address and email is up to date. You can update your mailing address on mySDCCD.
  • If you are not interested in attending the Commencement Ceremony, you do not need to respond.

Step 5: Register to Participate in the Commencement Ceremony

  • Your participation in the Commencement Ceremony is OPTIONAL for you to receive your degree or certificate, but it is strongly encouraged.
  • You must register to participate in the Commencement Ceremony.
  • Your invitation will contain registration information including a website where you will register to participate. 
  • The deadline to register for the 2018 Commencement Ceremony is: TBA

step 6: Receive Your Diploma in the mail

You will not receive your diploma for your degree or certificate at the Commencement Ceremony. Diplomas for summer, fall, and spring graduates are mailed directly to the students after ALL coursework requirements for your degree or certificate are completed successfully.

  • Diplomas are mailed to the address listed on mySDCCD usually 8 weeks after the end of the semester.
  • You will receive a diploma cover at the Commencement Ceremony.
  • Make sure your mailing address and email is up to date. You can update your mailing address on mySDCCD.
  • Degrees and/or Certificates of Achievements will be posted on official transcripts on the following dates:
      • Summer 2019 Graduates: October 2019
      • Fall 2019 Graduates: February 2020
      • Spring 2020 Graduates: July 2020
