Dr. Kottel has a B.A. degree form the University of California at Riverside, a M.S. degree California State University at Long Beach and a Ph.D. degree form Indiana University at Bloomington. His post-graduate work includes a post-doctoral position as a Research Fellow in Microbiology in Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and a position of Staff Cell Biologist at La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation. Dr. Kottel is a member of American Society for Microbiology and has taught both General Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and General Biology at Mesa College. His leisure time is spent camping, hiking, trail horseback riding and gardening.
