Socorro Cazares-Hunt was born in Los Angeles, California and lived in Tijuana, Mexico until the age of 17. She is a first-generation college graduate who overcame many obstacles. She received a B.A. from the University of San Diego in Chemistry/Biology, a M.A. degree from San Diego State University in pure math and a M.A. degree from the University of California, San Diego in applied math and computer sciences. She has also been the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship, a Berkeley Teacher's Fellowship and the University of San Diego Auxillary Tuition Grant. She currently teaches in the mathematics department at Mesa College.
