The public is invited to attend a grand opening on February 28th, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The Montgomery Family Success Center will serve as a one-stop center serving the children and families of the Linda Vista community. Among the services provided are: academic support; physical and mental health services; assistance in accessing community resources; post-educational preparation; workforce readiness; social and emotional support groups; counseling services; financial literacy; and parent/ student support which will foster success for the children and families in Linda Vista.
The opening event is hosted by Montgomery Middle School Principal Jonathan Ton and Vice Principal Myra Perdomo-Melendez. Eighty parents and students will join the school’s administrators and the Center’s community partners in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event will also feature inspirational performances by local youth and comments from San Diego Mesa College President Dr. Rita M. Cepeda; Council Member Donna Frye; and Health and Human Services Agency, North Central Deputy Director Nick Macchione.
Like many other San Diego public schools, Montgomery Middle School has been plagued by factors occurring in the immediate neighborhood, such as gang activity, illicit drugs, teen pregnancy, high dropout rate, and the school struggles to meet academic proficiency. Inadequate counselor-student ratios have hindered the school's ability to respond adequately to the ever growing social and emotional needs of students’ unique barriers to their social, emotional and educational growth and stability.
In 2004, Principal Ton and Vice Principal Perdomo-Melendez brought in Linda Vista community leaders united in solving similar concerns. The group combined resources to respond to the current climate of the school’s environment to bridge and transition area youth into leading healthy and fulfilling lives.
The group includes: Blue Cross of San Diego; Health and Human Services Agency, Child Welfare Services; Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Department Bayside Community Center; Kearny High School; Linda Vista Boys and Girls Club/ Teen Center; Linda Vista Civic Association; Linda Vista Collaborative; Linda Vista Health Care Clinic; Linda Vista Healthy Start; Parent Institute for Quality Education; San Diego County Commission on Children, Youth, and Families; San Diego Family Care; San Diego Mesa College; San Diego Workforce Partnership; Montgomery Middle School; SAY San Diego; University of San Diego, Department of Community Service Learning; World Financial Group.
