Description: This course is designed for anyone gaining an understanding of Latin American and Caribbean history, 1492-1810. It opens with a discussion of the pre-Encounter world, placing special emphasis on those aspects of Iberian, African and Indian life that helped shape colonization. During the semester, lectures delve into social-economic relations, the Crown and Church as shareholders in state power, and resistance to colonization and slavery. Throughout the course, references are made to Latin America's and the Caribbean's roles in the emergence of a modern, global social-economic system.
