SD Mesa finishes 4th at the State Championship!
The Mesa College Women's Volleyball Team finished in fourth place at the Commission on Athletes (COA) State Volleyball Tournament this past weekend in Fresno, California. In their first round match, the Lady Olympians were defeated by Sacramento City College in three straight games. The women rallied to defeat West Valley in their first evening match of the tournament. On Saturday, the Lady Olympians defeated top-seeded and number-one ranked team in the state, San Joaquin Delta, in a grueling, five-game match. This was a great win for Mesa College and the Women's Volleyball program. San Joaquin Delta has placed third or higher in the State tournament for the past seven consecutive seasons. In their evening match on Saturday, Mesa College lost to L. A. Pierce in four games, and finished fourth in the tournament. Under Coach Kim Lester, the Lady Olympians have twice placed with top-four finishes in the State tournament (placing second in 2004).Two players from the team received All-State honors for their play this season: Rayna Richardson, 5-11, Sophomore and Shannon Pugh, 5-11, Freshman.
The Lady Olympians were undefeated in Pacific Coast Conference play for the last three seasons, with a record of 36-0. This past season, the Lady Olympians did not lose a game as they swept every PCC opponent by the identical score of 3-0.
3rd Consecutive year - Conference Champions!
The Mesa College Women's Volleyball team have won their conference again for the 3rd year in a row, undefeated all 3 years! Shannon Pugh was named the Pacific Coast Conference MVP. Additionally, Rayna Richardson and Jessica LaScola made First Team All Conference as Alyssa Factuar and Candice Bixler made Second Team All Conference. The Mesa Women's Volleyball team has clinched it's second straight conference championship! The Olympians advanced to the So. Cal Regional Playoffs where they met Irvine Valley and lost in a match that was a battle. "I am very proud of our team" said Coach Kim Lester. "We came out tonight and gave it our all against a very tough team". The team finished the 2005 season 19-4 overall and 12-0 in conference and ranked 16th in the state.
In 2004, the Womens Volleyball team (22-5) under coach Kim Lester completed its highest finish in the program's history against State Champion Golden West. The Olympians were led to a runner-up finish by All-Tournament player Melissa Ford with 12 kills and 18 digs and Rayna Richardson with 11 kills.All-Tournament pick and All-American Bri Beal had 8 kills, a Mesa team-high 24 digs, and 3 aces.
Mesa eliminated both Taft (in 4 games) and number 1 North seed San Joaquin Delta in 5 games earlier on Sunday, playing a total of 12 games on a very exhausting Dec. 5. "Fatigue is always a factor and Golden West does not make mistakes" Coach Lester said.
Overall, Mesa actually had more kills than Golden West (46-45) but the fewer hitting errors by Golden West made the difference and they took the victory and claimed the State Title. The winning margin was a combined 15 points, which indicates how close this final tournament really was!
