VanHess and West Earn Trip to SoCals; Trip to Ojai Next

4/19/08 - San Diego, CA - Sophomore James VanHess and Freshman Harrison West have both earned trips to the Southern California Regional Championships to be held in Riverside, California, May 1 - 3. VanHess will play in both singles and doubles while West will play doubles with VanHess. Prior to the SoCal Championships, four Olympians will be competing in the annual Ojai Tournament. VanHess and West will play singles while teaming up in doubles while Freshmen Shane Cerney and Kongmeng Fang will also play doubles. Olympians Win Season Finale 5-4; PCC Tournament Next

4/10/08 - San Diego, CA - The Olympians finished the regular season 9-8 overall and 8-6 in Pacific Coast Conference play with a 5-4 win today over City College.  Mesa won at 1,2,4, and 5 singles and 1 doubles.  The Olympians won all three 5-4 matches this season and finished 12-4 overall in 3rd set 10-point super tiebreakers.

The Olympians will be off until next Thursday where they will compete in the Pacific Coast Conference Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma.  Singles matches will begin at 8 AM while doubles matches will begin at Noon.  The tournament will continue on Friday the 18th with all the finals matches on Saturday the 19th.

Olympians Beat Long Beach in Final Home Match

4/9/08 - San Diego, CA - Mesa defeated visiting Long Beach City College 7-2. The Olympians were able to overcome the loss of their #1 player, James VanHess out due to an injury. Harrison West filled his role nicely beating Max Vallejo 6-0; 6-1. The Olympians also won 2,3,4, and 6 singles. In doubles, West and Cerney beat Vallejo and Reynold Tacsuan 8-1. Mesa won at 3 doubles as well. Mesa travels to City College tomorrow for their final regular season match at 2 PM.

Mesa Sweeps Season Series With Southwestern

4/3/08 - Chula Vista, CA - Mesa won two more super tie-breakers Thursday afternoon in route to beating Southwestern 8-1. The Olympians are 11-1 in 3rd set, 10-point super tiebreakers this season. The Olympians swept the season series against Southwestern after losing both matches to the Jaguars in 2007. Mesa won five of the six singles matches and all three doubles in route to earning their 7th conference win of the season. The Olympians are now 7-7 overall and 7-5 in PCC play. Mesa will play it's final home match of 2008 this Tuesday versus state-ranked Grossmont College at 2 PM.

Mesa Blanks Victor Valley 9-0 To Sweep Season Series

4/1/08 - San Diego, CA - Mesa prevailed against conference foe Victor Valley Tuesday afternoon, 9-0. James VanHess, Harrison West, Shane Cerney, Johnny Lu, Kongmeng Fang, and Zeeshan Amjad all won in singles while VanHess and West won at #1 doubles, Adrian Munoz and Amjad won at #2 doubles, and Cerney and Fang won at #3 doubles. The Olympians travel to Southwestern College on Thursday to play a 2 PM match. In their first matchup on 3/4, the Olympians prevailed 5-4. Mesa next returns home on Tuesday, 4/8 against state-ranked Grossmont at 2 PM.

Mesa Beats IVC For The Second Time

3/25/08 - San Diego, CA - The Olympians beat Imperial Valley 8-1 on Tuesday. The win gives the Olympians a 5-4 record in PCC play. Mesa won all six singles matches and 2 of the three doubles matches.

Olympians Beat City

3/11/08 - San Diego, CA - The Olympians continued their strong conference play by defeating the Knights of City College this afternoon, 7-2. The Olympians are now 4-3 in Pacific Coast Conference play. Mesa travels to Mount San Jacinto College this Thursday before returning home for three straight matches against Imperial Valley, Palomar, and Victor Valley, on 3/25, 3/27, and 4/1, respectively. The Olympians will be off next week with no matches scheduled due to spring break.

Olympians Prevail Against Southwestern Without Their #1...

3/4/08 - San Diego, CA - Despite playing their match versus Southwestern College on Tuesday afternoon without their top player, James VanHess, the Olympians still prevailed, 5-4. The win pushed the Olympians to 3-2 in the Pacific Coast Conference and 3-4 overall. After 4 1/2 hours of tennis, the last match of the evening was at #2 doubles. Mesa's team of Kongmeng Fang and Johnny Lu (also teammates in high school at Kearny High) won the third set 10-point super-tiebreaker 10-7 to give the Olympians the 5th and decisive point of the match. "I'm very proud of them," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "To win a close match without our top player says a lot about the character of our team," concluded Coach Hootner. The Olympians next play this Thursday, 3/6, at 2 PM at Grossmont College against the state-ranked Griffins.

Season Preview

Change is the operative word as the 2008 season gets underway. First, the 2008 campaign will begin with a new man at the helm. Dennis Oppeltz, who was the Olympian Head Coach for more than 30 years will hand over the reigns to first year Head Coach, Michael Hootner. More...

Hootner Begins Preparations for 2009

Michael Hootner begins his second year as the Head Men's Tennis Coach at Mesa.

During his first year, he lead the Olympians to a 9-8 overall record and an 8-6 Pacific Coast Conference Record.

Prior to assuming his head coaching duties, Hootner served as the Assistant Men's Tennis Coach from 2003-2007.

Hootner played collegiately for one year at Goucher College (MD), where he earned All-Conference honors in doubles during his senior campaign in 1992.

After earning his Master's Degree from Frostburg State University in 1994, Hootner returned to his undergraduate alma mater as the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach from 1994-99 and Head Men's Tennis Coach from 1996-99.

During his three-year stint as the Head Tennis Coach, his teams went 12-6 and 16-3 during his final two campaigns. His squad earned it's first ever regional ranking (#11) and still holds the school record for most wins and least losses for a single season.

Hootner also currently serves as the Head Women's Basketball Coach for the Olympians while teaching Health, Exercise Science, and Physical Education classes at both Mesa College and Grossmont College.

Hootner is engaged to Jennifer Simley, and has a stepson, Ethan Simley Jr.
