Women’s Cross Country Shines with 13th Place Finish at State Championships
Michelle Thompson led the ladies cross country team with a 21st place finish at the state championships.
The ladies cross country team ran a great team race to finish 13th at the State Championships run in Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, November 21. The meet was a satisfying conclusion to a successful season for the Mesa women.
Michelle Thompson, as she had throughout the season, lead the way for the team with her 21st place finish in a fine time of 18:58. Michelle made a valiant run, just missing the all-state team by a mere nine seconds. Also placing in the top 50 with her 39th place finish was Suzanne Cornwell. Suzanne's time of 19:33 was indicative of her best performance of the season and was a major factor in the success the team experienced in 2009. The other scoring members of the team were Kristy Schneider (20:42), Bri Sherelis (21:41) and Jessyca Henman (21:43).
Coach Renee Ross was especially pleased with the team's effort as “the team showed tremendous growth and improvement throughout the season”. Ross added that “A 13th place finish didn't seem possible when the season began but the ladies worked hard throughout the season to cap a successful season”.
Women’s 10th Place Finish At Southern California Regional Garners State Championships Berth
Suzanne Cornwell ran her best race of the year to make a major contribution toward the women's cross country team qualifying for the state championships.
The ladies cross country came through with a strong team effort to finish in 10th place at the Southern California Regional Championships at Mt. SAC. Their fine effort over the 5000 meter course qualifies them for the state championships to be held in Fresno on Saturday, November 21. Leading the way for Mesa was Michelle Thompson, whose 15th place finish in 18:55 put the team on the road to qualifying. Michelle's steady and consistent performances this season have been the anchor as the team has gained experience and improved throughout the season. Running her best race of the year, Suzanne Cornwell improved tremendously to finish in 36th place with a time of 19:42. Her effort over the hilly Mt. SAC course moved her up in place steadily during the race. Teaming up and offering each other support, Jessyca Henman (88th, 20:53) and Kristi Schneider (92nd, 20:59) ran strong races. Brianna Sherelis cemented Mesa's top ten team finish with her 112th place finish in a time of 21:33. Kim Goodwin made major improvements on her time on the Mt. SAC course and finished in 24:30 for 172nd place. Overall the ladies had their best team performance of the year and it showed.
Mesa Women Finish Strong Second at Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships
Michelle Thompson again led the way for the women's cross country team with a solid third place finish in the conference championships.
The San Diego Mesa College women's cross country team came through with a solid team effort to finish second in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships held Friday, October 30 at Morley Field. Leading the way was Michelle Thompson, whose third place finish over the 5k course broke up the strong pack from winning Southwestern College. Mesa's team strength was evident when the women took four of the next five places to solidify their runner-up finish. Suzanne Cornwell started the ball rolling for the mass Mesa finish with a sixth place effort in a solid time of 21:13. Her recent improvement bodes well as the women compete next in the Southern California Championships this week. Parading across the line after Suzanne were Kristina Schneider (8th, 22:26), Jessyca Henman (9th, 22:27) and Brianna Sherelis (10th, 22:37). All five of the top Mesa athletes made the all-conference team. Kim Goodwin ran her best race of the year to finish 21st in 24:43 over the challenging Morley Field course.
The strong team showing is especially good as the team heads into the So Cal and State championship races. Coach Rene Ross was especially happy that “Our team depth is getting stronger and stronger as the season progresses. We're looking forward to competing well at Mt. SAC next week”.
Women’s Cross Country Opens Season at Aztec Invitational
Michelle Thompson (front) and Jessyca Henman lead the way for the Mesa College women's cross country team at the Aztec Invitational.
The Mesa College women's cross country team opened the season Saturday at the 65th Annual Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State University at Balboa Park.
Fresh off of last year's eighth place finish at the state championships the women were looking forward to another rewarding season. This year's season began on a high note as the women finished in 9th place of the 12 teams competing. All of the competition came from four-year schools. The result was extremely impressive considering that five of the seven team members were competing in their first collegiate competition.
Leading the way for the Mesa Ladies was top returning team member Michelle Thompson. Michelle finished in an outstanding 19th place overall in a time of 19:47 over the 5k course. Given the challenging nature of the course this result puts Michelle into the top elite level of community college state competition. Backing up Michelle was top newcomer Suzanne Cornwell who finished 72nd overall in a time of 22:39. Suzanne's result was especially encouraging given the fact that she actually joined the team just a few weeks ago and should improve dramatically given more training time. Right behind Suzanne was the squad's other returning member Jessyca Henman. Jessyca finished in 78th place in a time of 23:23. The other scoring member's of the women's team (five runners score) were Kristy Schneider (24:07) and Brianna Sherells (24:29) who worked well together to finish in 85th and 86th places.
The women are looking forward to their next competition, the Foothill Invitational, where they will get a chance to see how they stack up against other community college competition. The Foothill Invitational will be held on Saturday, October 3rd at Legg Lake in El Monte.
