Purpose

The Faculty/Staff Committee on Distance Education shall be responsible for:

• Alerting faculty to State and District online education policy matters;
• Providing a forum for discussing online instructional issues;
• Directing faculty to resources that support best practices and guidelines in online pedagogy;
• Scheduling and advertising Flex presentations and other professional development opportunities for
  faculty and staff in the use of Blackboard, the progress of the State’s Online Education Initiative
  (OEI), and other issues involving online classes and pedagogy;
• Conducting periodic surveys of faculty and staff about the satisfaction level of online classes among
   students, faculty and staff; advising the Academic Senate of any needed action with regard to
   Distance Learning.
• Helping to develop policies for evaluation of online instruction.

Goals

  1. Track trends, policies, and changes in Distance Education at the district and state levels, and share that information with Mesa faculty and staff.
  2. Support and advocate for distance education faculty, and for the continuous improvement of our DE program, with the understanding that Distance Education is a key component of Mesa’s mission to be the leading college of equity & excellence.
  3. Report to the Academic Senate and the President’s Cabinet regarding distance education issues and needs.
  4. Develop or contribute to professional learning opportunities that prioritize equity, access, and student success in online course design, including but not limited to:
    - Supporting the creation of a Mesa College Online teaching and Learning Certificate
    - Supporting the continuous development of Mesa-specific, cohort based professional development opportunities for DE faculty.
